Temple Grandin is pioneering figure in Autism advocacy, animal science and the neurodiversity movement. Among other achievements, Grandin invented the hug machine, overhauled livestock handling practices and became a champion for brains that are "different, not less." Somehow, she's still found time for shuteye. Here's what Grandin told us about her sleep habits.
What's your typical sleep schedule?
I need 6 to 8 hours of sleep every night. Often I alternate between one good night's sleep and one night of poor sleep.
What do you do when you can't get to sleep?
I get up and read or exercise. Sometimes I take an aspirin and wait 20 minutes. The aspirin stops little aches and pains that interfere with sleep.
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
I often do reading or writing.
When was the last time you stayed up all night?
I never stay up all night unless I am on an airplane and I cannot sleep.
What about naps — are you a fan?
During a normal day, I do not nap, but napping on a plane is common. (I have accumulated over 2 million airline miles.)
Do you remember your dreams?
[Yes,] I remember my dreams. All my dreams are in full color.
